I recently bought a 4 qt West Bend for about 20 dollars. A slow cooker is an electric cooker that cooks food very slowly with less heat. The pot is heavy and is made of ceramic.
I have discovered that you can use it to make excellent tomato onion chutney with very little effort :). I add some oil, onions, tomato, a bit of tamarind, a pinch of brown sugar (or jaggery), salt and chilli powder and let it cook on high with the lid partially off. I do monitor it, that is, stir it from time to time so that it doesn't stick to the sides. After about four to five hours when the house smells nice and when the mixture starts coming off the sides of the vessel, I switch it off. I grind it after it has cooled and then fry it for a couple of minutes with oil and mustard. I am able to make large batches of this chutney.
My cousin in North Carolina makes khoa using the slow cooker. I have also seen recipes for payasam (kheer) and pudding.
